Mogadishu Port Operations Increase as Throughput Grows

Mogadishu's port continues to handle the largest share of Somalia's imports, and changes in its throughput are felt quickly in market prices across the southern regions.

The port has been under concession management since 2014, and the arrangement brought equipment renewal, systematic revenue collection and digital customs processing to a facility that had operated informally for much of the preceding two decades. Port revenue is one of the federal government's most important domestic income streams, which makes throughput a fiscal question as well as a commercial one.

Somalia's port system is not centralised. Bosaso in Puntland serves the north-east and is a major livestock export point for Gulf markets. Kismayo serves Jubaland and the Juba valley. Berbera, in Somaliland, has received significant terminal investment. Each serves a distinct hinterland, and the balance between them is a live political question in a federal system where revenue-sharing between the centre and the member states is unsettled.

The import mix reflects the structure of the economy. Food, fuel, construction material and consumer goods dominate inbound volume. Outbound volume is much smaller and is concentrated in livestock, hides, charcoal — the export of which is subject to a UN ban — and fisheries.

Fisheries are the most underdeveloped category relative to potential. Somalia's coastline is the longest in mainland Africa and its waters are productive, but cold-chain infrastructure, processing capacity and licensing enforcement all remain limited.
